    Can't open downloaded programmes

    I got a Toshiba NB100 netbook yesterday for my birthday which has Linux and everytime i try to download a programme it saves it to the desktop and when i try to open it it says that an application is needed to run the programme... is there something i need to download to open downloaded programmes?? im really confuzed lol!!!!!!!

    Installation of software in linux is a little different than in Windows. You should pretty much always use your package manager to install software.

    Just out of curiosity, the page you downloaded the program from should have a system requiements to run said downloaded program. What does it say?

    Also, if you do intend to run Windows programs on Linux, look in Synaptic and install the package called wine. It's not perfect, but most small distractions work fine.
