[SOLVED] (also) Need help with installation on iMac G3

I am thinking about using Ubuntu on my G3 iMac, but i dont want to wipe the hard drive. Tiger is installed on it, and i have files that i dont want to lose. A friend suggested buying a external hard drive, and having it on there, but i am not sure if this would work, or if there was another way of doing it. i saw the Easy Way to Install Ubuntu on iMac G3 on the Ubuntu forums, and my friend says that would wipe the hard drive...
any help, or info on ways of installation would be appreciated!
I guess im basically asking, if having a external hard drive run linux would work....

How much RAM does your iMac have? What CPU are you using, the stock one?
With less than 512 MB of RAM and ~300 MHz CPU your Ubuntu experience won't be too pleasant.

Sorry, I do not understand what you mean by 'partition my hard drive between Ubuntu and the Tiger on the external drive'.
I'd back up all your user files in Tiger to a safe place and start experimenting.
