    Wubi.exe hates me

Hi folks, 1st post for me. Made the comitment to Linux, now I need to follow through on the initial problem.

Problem- burned iso, no sweat done it a hundred times. Burn copy off my son's lap top, plop it in the tray on my machine. Windows error notice upon clicking on wubi.exe (which does not work in autoplay):

"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem. "

So I put the burn back in my son's lap top tray and slap it shut. Poof, autoplay Ubuntu as it ought ot be. I try 3 different burns, different speeds, and a dvd copy. Nuthin, nada zilch zip.. same error on my pc each time. Any thoughts?

I am confused a little by your post so please forgive me if I am off base in my reply.

Wubi is a net install of Ubuntu that runs inside of Windows. You don't burn a cd of it. You just download the EXE. and click on it to start the install process. This installs Ubuntu inside of Windows Partition as a File. A Large file at that. Depending how much space you give it during Install Process. (one of the install windows will ask how much space you are willling to give Ubuntu, whether 8gig, 13gig, and so on)

If you Downloaded a 600+ mb iso of Ubuntu and md5sum checked said iso. And set boot order in bios to boot cd first. You should just get a grub menu to boot up as a live cd or install or memtest. Wubi is not a option.

So just click on the downloaded wubi icon on Windows Desktop. No need to burn a cd. And follow the install prompts. If you fail with booting into Ubuntu (Wubi Install) , you can go back into Windows, Find Ubuntu in one of the C drive folders. Open the Ubuntu folder and there should be a uninstall icon in it. That is what you click to uninstall Ubuntu Wubi. Hope that clears things up for you. Happy Trails, rokytnji

    Hello and Welcome.
Have you tried the installer from the Wubi website? You don't even need to burn an ISO for this to work.
Wubi - Ubuntu Installer for Windows

MikeTbob- Wubi installer. Did that yesterday, almost the same result.

rokytnji- I read that Ubuntu is the drop in replacment for windows. You can run it independent or partitioned. I want a clean windows free install, but in my linux ignorance I first wanted to test executables. Like I said, works fine on my son's lap top (XP) my desk top (Xp pro). I have tried every approach to this and I'm savvy enough that this wouldn't normally be a problem. But the Ubuntu website says what it says, download the file and burn it to create a dual purpose CD. Can be a live CD and or installer. My first look into the problem suggested that you are suppose to burn it 4x speed. Did it, still had same probelm. Next I tried boot sequences until I was blue in the face. So after restoring my bios, and cursing I brought it all here to test it out. I know my discs are good, the question is.... why won't my recently reloaded XP pro read the executable wubi.exe, because if I'm reading it right, then thats critical to install, no?

You are still confusing me brian. Wubi is not invovled in a 600 + mb iso? I don't run a Wubi Install or Windows on this box for that matter. My entire systems except for one I use to tune motorcycles is all Linux. I don't know why the exe. won;t launch in Windows. On a bootable Iso though I would use a boot cheat code like acpi=off or nodma if encountering a problem booting up a live iso. In other words, I have partitoned hardrive dedicated to Linux install. My dual boots are all Linux. I use Windows 2000 pro on one Laptop to just tune bikes. If I wish to go on the net wirelessly with that Laptop I boot into Antix 8. I don't trust Windows when it comes to going on line. It is just a tool I use to tune bikes and that is all I use it for. Everything else I do in Linux.

why won't my recently reloaded XP pro read the executable wubi.exe, because if I'm reading it right, then thats critical to install, no?
I don't know why windows won't execute your wubi download. Windows is famous for malware fudging up all kinds of things when something like malware gets into a pc. I can only suggest that you maybe either rename the wubi exec and try to execute it or do a Highjack this log on a forum like THIS ONE to see if your XP is clean of any malware maybe. Also, Are you also saying you can't boot up a live CD of Ubuntu that was downloaded from HERE because that is a different problem entirely. Happy Trails, rokytnji

hehe, funny you say that, because it's a clean new install of xp pro (2 days old). The mission is to replace it with Ubuntu, because I'm not into dual boot. It's definitely my machine, I just launched the lnx cd here at work on this aged compaq, again, works fine. Autoplay or dbl click wubi.exe and it initiates. So I need to revisit configs on the target machine. My problem lays in the fact that I know zero about Linux except for a brief spat of usage on the job.

Yeah, maybe on your xp laptop install in properties or something windows instead of trying to run it as a executable tries to open it as a read me instead maybe. Man I am just guessing here though. Just out of Curiosity. Have you tried downloading something Like Linux Mint. Which is a live CD also and is (my opinion only) Ubuntu with Codecs preinstalled. Just to see if it will boot up completely. No need to install it if you don't wish to.

Well you see my problem now, I'm as confused as anyone. I have given consideration to Mint, but Ubuntu was suppose to be a live cd application too, well at least 9.04 is suppose to be. So I thought about Mint, but then thought something really stripped down just to prove it will work on my hardware config. I've read Slackware is minimal. But I've done a lot of nutty things with windows and hardware to get by, but this has me stumped. I can't help thinking this is my new dvd/burner not reading correctly, I'm gonna switch it tongiht.

Roky, Unless I am very much mistaken, wubi is included on the disk, however it seems rather foolish to me as well, to burn the CD instead of just taking wubi from the web.
That is much easier, and more cost effective since you don't have to burn anything.

And Brian, does the account you're using to run Wubi, have administrator privileges? Unlikely it doesn't in XP by default, but wise users tend to make a special user account, only capable of running apps, not installing them (Wubi is a genuine installer).

I am probably the one mistaken Bemk as I have yet to boot up a Ubuntu 9.04 CD. I run 8.04 LTS on my Desktop. Everuthing else I run is more related to Debian (AntiX) or Slackware (Puppy Linux, NimbleX). Its has been awhile since I installed Ubuntu. Been trouble free for me, So I am probably wrong about there being no wubi exe. on the 9.04 live cd. I am not just used to a wubi install is all.
