    Question Installing Drivers

    Hi guys,
You'll have to excuse the newbiness of this question as I only experienced Linux for the first time 2 days ago.

Basically, I need to know what drivers are already installed for my hardware, as I'm currently having problems with both sound and video. How do I find out what drivers I have installed currently in order to assess the need for an update.

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Dan!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux! I'm a newbie too. The one who introduced me to Ubuntu told me about this and it helped me:

I bet it will help you too!

I believe Ubuntu has some graphical hardware detection tools available, though I'm not sure what they are.

The basic command line tools to get info about hardware are

    lspci
    lsusb
    lshw
    lsmod

    lspci lists pci devices.
    lsusb lists usb devices.
lshw gives more detail on hardware configuration.
    lsmod lists loaded modules/drivers.

    Thanks Reed.

This is exactly what I was looking for, it tells me that all my drivers are in fact up to date! Which means my sound problems are with my speakers themselves (not surprising because I've had to do a manual repair job on them) - I appreciate the help!
