    I would think if anything can do it, it would be avidemux.

    sadly avidmux seems to only want to do up to 4 gigs

    What video your MPG must contain? MPEG-2?
    MKV is just a container, the video inside is usually MPEG-4. Audio may be AAC.
    MPG files usually have MPEG-2 video and MPEG-1 sound (but can be AAC).
    MPEG-4 is much more advanced compression standard, converting it into MPEG-2 means much bigger files.

    What for you need this conversion?

    after a hair-pulling good time i got media info gui installed got sent is making AVC video files

    i got mkv2vob running in wine. i just did a 720p video, im watching the video looks as clean as the source is, media info confirms its same bitrate and resolution.. incase anyone wants to know what you have to do get it rolling in wine heres the page It works! Mkv2vob in Linux | unyttig.INFO .. i had issues with this ./winetricks vb6run wsh56 terminal kept saying access denied so i just typed sh winetricks and selected the 2 files it wants
