I've never seen this in KDE (I have in lighter window managers). It may be some glitch.

Does [Alt + Tab] work to bring back your application(s)?

    Yes, this switches between applications.
I right clicked on the panel and selected: panel options > add widgets > system tray
(access hidden applications minimized in the system tray). This didn't fix the problem.

Have you tried logging out and in? There is a bug where items on the taskbar disappear but this includes all items, not just the programs and can be solved by logging out and back in again.

I can’t remember the bug number but the last time I checked it out there wasn’t a fix

At least you're not totally high and dry.

Searching the web has offered a few possibilities. First, the systray is the icons on the right, not the correct docker widgit. It's possible that the taskbar got deleted from the dock, so you can try re-adding that:
right click -> Add Applet.. -> Taskbar

Another theory was that the Window selector crashed, suggested trying to re-launch it via Gnome.

I've seen some other posts about the same problem with no solution, so I hope something here helps you out.

This help. I can choose between minimized applications with this. I couldn't find:
right click -> Add Applet.. -> Taskbar
I'm just used to being able to switch between applications that aren't minimized, but with
the Task Manager I need to minimize the applications to see it.

    Thanks for help

When you right click on the dock bar, you should be presented with this menu:

Clicking the Add Applet Should show this menu, or something similar (are you using KDE 3.5 or KDE4?)

    This is KDE 4?
Use the "Turd" in the upper right hand corner of your desktop and select Widgets, to get the above posted window open.

    Using KDE 4.2.2

When I select Add widget I get something similar to that. I don't see a Taskbar
for selection; just a Task Manger.

How many or how big of programs do I need for dependencies would I need on
Gnome to use KDE programs such as K3b, Amarok ? I thought I might replace KDE
with Gnome if I can't get things working the way I want.

    Thanks

I figured out what the problem was.
I didn't have a panel on the Desktop. I must have deleted it somehow. I added a panel
then I right clicked on the panel > panel options > add widgets > Task Manager
Now I have tabs of the applications I have open on the panel.
