    Kubuntu not taking password

Ok, so I am using the latest Ubuntu distro with the newest kernal updates (installed today). I decided to try out Kubuntu and give it a ride. So I download and install using Synaptic. After it installs, I reboot. When I get to the login screen, it has my user name already in the top box. When I type in my password, the screen goes black (like it's restarting) and the login screen comes up again. If I type a different password, it just says Invalid Login. When I do the correct one, it just restarts and the login screen starts up again. So, I just started up GNOME to try to get some help. Any ideas?

It's failing to start the session for some reason. From the login screen, press ALT+CTRL+F2. This will drop you to a console login prompt. After you login, type startx.

Assuming the X session fails here to, you will now see a bunch of error messages, which should help troubleshoot the problem. Post the error messages here.

FYI: To shutdown from the console, type
    Code:
    sudo shutdown -h now
