    Question [SOLVED] not good!

    Ok, here's the deal.

I stuffed up Firefox, by trying to manually install Firefox 3.5 (tar.bz2)

The problem is that I noticed it wasn't installing, and it thought that it was Firefox 3.0.12. (My default version) so, in case I had messed something up, I went to synaptic, and deleted all my firefox files (as far as I know) Buuut. Some how I have two versions now! They're both 3.0.12, and one won't allow you to use the navigational controls, my bookmarks are gone, and whenever I select the text field: 'Title' in Linux forums, CPU overloads, and Firefox hangs.

The other one on the other hand, has all my bookmarks, is user friendly, and no hangs.

How do I get rid of Numba#1? It's the default, and opens whenever I click the apps> Internet> Firefox icon.

The other one is in: usr>lib>firefox 3.0.12, and is called Firefox.

My first option, is I could clear the apps cache, compltely remove firefox after backing up, and then re install/download it again.

I don't know the other options.

    Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease help!

Your bookmarks.html should be inside your .mozilla/firefox/default user whatever that is directory. Go into it and make a copy of your bookmarks and put it somewhere like your desktop so it will be safe. Then, delete the install you don't want. Do from the commasnd line:
    Code:
    whereis firefox
...and decide which is which. Once you know which one is the problem, delete it or uninstall it. After deleting the one that is the problem, add the bookmarks to the one that works the way you want it to if the bookmarks are not there already...

Exclamation I merged web browsers! help!

    Yeah,

I uninstalled both of them, and when I reinstalled them, Another web browser called 'Shiretoko' installed itself! It looks identical to mozilla firefox, except with a different launch icon and the new tab button are different. I googled it, and this does not look good...

    Shiretoko Alpha 1 Release Notes

It's a testing browser! How on earth! It works fine though, and although it said that my plugins and add ons from my prevoius browser are incompatible with it...they work.

    I think I just merged 2 browsers!

Arrow What's the best way to un-install software?

I need to know the best way to uninstall software.

I need to completely remove all directories and all files from Firefox and Shiretoko.
I tried synaptic, but it just reloads the programs from somewhere.

    Help! What do I do?!

You must have enabled the testing repositories. I'm not sure how you did this, so I can't tell you how to undo it. I would certainly disable that before trying to install anything new.

Edit: You don't by any chance have this repository enabled?

    If so, disable it!

Shiretoko is the codename for Firefox 3.5. The next release, 3.6, is Namoroka.

Talking Where are the app data directories?

Okay, I know what I'm gonna' do.

I'll uninstall all Firefox related programs, go to the directories where any extra info is stored, and do a janitor cleanup, then, finally reinstall the latest version.

Does anyone know the complete list of install and data directories for Firefox?

Or at least know where I can get the list?

    Thanks,
    ~Caleb

Open the Synaptic Package Manager. Find Firefox, right-click it and select "Properties". Click on the "Installed Files" tab for a list of files, by location.

    Yay!

Okay! Done! Everything is fixed! And I now have firefox 3.5!

But only two problems. One, Adobe flash didn't install properly, and now synaptic won't open cuz it keeps displaying:

'The package adobe flash plugin needs to be reinstalled, But I can't find an archive for it.'
And below that it says: 'This usually means the package has unmet dependencies.'

And also, (this is not really a problem) Shiretoko comes default with Firefox 3.0.12.

How do I get rid of Firefox 3.0.12?

    Thanks!

I have Firefox 3.0.12, and it is not called Shiretoko. When I click Help-->About Mozilla Firefox, I see this:

    Firefox
    version 3.0.12

    Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu
    canonical - 1.0

If you deleted files without uninstalling it, you may have to reinstall it first, then uninstall it. Use apt from the command line instead of Synaptic.

In fact, you may be able to get apt to fix the problem with Adobe. The options --fix-broken or --fix-missing may work. Read the apt-get man pages for more info.
    Code:
    man apt-get
