    I think it's easier from the command line than a GUI, but if you must have a GUI, you can add a custom action in Nautilus to use the shred command.

    I've been told that if you are using a journalling filesystem that this may not be not entirely reliable, that shredding only works effectively on non-journalled systems.

    My understanding is that shred may have troubles with log-structured filesystems, like NILFS, but should not have an issue with journaled filesystems, like ext3, unless you are using data=journal. With the usual data=ordered or data=writeback, you're only journaling metadata, not file data, and it should work fine.

    I have always used kgpg... but in this case that would require that you install KDE apps. Also, I'm not sure if it'll play nice with your Gnome desktop in Ubuntu. Still, there it is... you just drag and drop stuff to shred it.
