I can be found either 40 miles west of Chicago, or in a galaxy far, far away.

Are you running wired or wireless ethernet? Also, are you using a static IP address, or are using a dhcp server to get an address? If using dhcp (default), the gateway and such are provided by the dhcp server and are not saved by your system. If you are using a static IP address and have configured your network that way, then it will remember the gateway and dns server information. So, I am guessing that you are using dhcp and see this problem before you connect to your router/dhcp server.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
