Need VMware instructions
I want to install this on Ubuntu as my host, and have XP as my guest OS, but I can't seem to get it to install properly. I've downloaded the .bundle from the site, made it executable, but when I run:
I get this:Code:$ sudo ./VMware-Workstation-6.5.2-156735.i386.bundle
./VMware-Workstation-6.5.2-156735.i386.bundle: line 1: syntax error near unexpected token `<'
./VMware-Workstation-6.5.2-156735.i386.bundle: line 1: `<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>Error</TITLE></HEAD><BODY>'
I've also tried to download the .rpm package... but the download hangs up after about 50Mb or so and just crawls... so either I need the .bundle to work, or I have to settle with VB... I would prefer Vmware though.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
I have this installed in windows... is it possible to set xp up as a guest and Ubuntu as a host from the windows version?

Have you read this page yet?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VMware
It looks like from what you wrote above that you downloaded the error web page, not the file itself. This can happen sometimes.
Acquire the package from their official site.
Download VMware Player, Free VMware

Since I don't even have VMware installed yet, that article doesn't really help. It may in the future when I want the tools, so thanks.
And the .bundle I have is the one from their website. I got two files. One is a .bundle and the other has identical name but different icon and is a .bundle.part file. Whatever that means...

The page is also about installing the package and another tool that is handy for creating a new VM.
The second link provided is the download page.
A ".part" file is a partial download. It normally is deleted (well, actually renamed) after a download is completed. If the .part file exists after the download is supposedly done, it's a sign that your download was not successful.
That is backed up by your code above, which is HTML code and in no way an archive, shell script, or Linux binary. You need to try the download again, and if the same result, try another version.

Well, that makes sense... but I've never had it happen with FF before though...
I can try again, certainly... I just don't have the fastest internet in the the world so it will only take up four hours of time...
As to your download page. Are you saying that I should get Vmplayer as opposed to the Workstation? Whats the difference?

VMPlayer is free, the workstation requires a paid license. The player does not have internal tools to create a new VM, Workstation does. Thus, there is the other tool pointed out (EasyVMX) to create a new blank VM, then you can use the player to install and run another OS like WinXP.

Do you know how the performance compares between the two(Player and WS)? I'm assuming that the WS will be bettter... Thats the reason I chose it over VB. VB looks a lot easier, but everything I've read says that VMware is better performing overall.
Until I get this solved, I guess I'll test my win xp VM with a copy of Karmic Koala Alpha 3... get an idea what that is going to be like before it goes Beta...

It depends on your processor. If your processor has HVM / VT capability, there's potential for VMWare to outperform VBox. I like VBox better just because it's easier and installation in Linux is painless (Open Source version is available in Synaptic). Even for the Sun full version download, there's rpm and I think deb packages, so it's still basically a point-and-click install, and there's no special tools needed to make a new VM.
As far as the differences between VMWare's Workstation vs Player, I don't think there's too much performance difference. I know the WS has some other useful features that are handy for server operators (like having it's own real partition), but nothing that I'd think a home user needs to shell out $$$ for.

I decided to go with Vb instead. My Vm is up and running! All I need to figure out now is how to download stuff onto it... I cant use my Cd rom drive at all on the guest... which kinda defeats the purpose of having a VM to run software... any way to solve this? Also, how do I bridge the network? I didn't see an option for what I use.
