Can you hit the escape key at the boot up and go into grub menu?

if your windows installation is still there you can edit the menu.lst file and re-arrange the settings.

menu.lst file usually changes the hd0,0 into hd0,1 or something like that...
so play around with those settings, if you press e at the grub you can change/edit the settings without making permanent changes.

Only difference I see between your menu.lst file and the one in my box is that your file points to the root / of the drive for the boot file, mine points to /boot/ folder?

As for the WinXP I am not sure? it seems like is going into a loop? map hd0 to hd1 and the next line says map hd1 to hd0!?

I put a # sign in front of one of them and try the other.

    grub is installed in /etc
