Left click on your desktop, it should bring up a window and select appearance settings, it will then open up the desktop settings window. Look for image type and select. You can also look for new images. I hope this is what you mean, when you say tty background image.

I can't really help, but to DeadPanFlea:
He means the tty, like when you use Ctrl + Alt + F*
I'm not aware of how this is done, but I've been planning on reading about it because openSUSE uses a background image in its tty's, and it makes me curious. If no one has answered and I find the answer, I'll post it here.

It appears to be far more complicated a process than you might think. At least, all I could find on it involves patching and recompiling the kernel.

I looked around for a while, and didn't find anything. But I was starting to think that you'd probably have to tinker with the kernel.

I think it's a bootsplash related feature, not sure.

Even I saw it for the first time on SUSE , after a fresh install it has a black dotted image on the background. It would be fantastic if it could be done with little tweaks on ubuntu. I searched a lot but couldn't find a helpful resource.

    tty??

vickey_20 if you are talking about changing background images for the likes of the logon, bootsplash and so on, UbuntuSE installed will give you some options. They may not be to your liking but, I would think you could copy your own images into the destination folders.
