    Networking Ubuntu Machines

Hey ppl. Need some advice here. I've got a home server running Ubuntu Server 9.04 and several machines running Ubuntu Desktop (9.04 and 8.04) and Windows (XP, Vista and 7). Now what I want to do is to create a domain and directory server similar in function to Windows Server w/ AD and join my other machines to the domain, but am not sure where to start. I already have file shares with Samba but now I want to setup a domain.

Has anyone any advice on this?

Becuase you are running ubuntu on the server, you cannot exactly just run a domain using Ad..... because its not windows. its ubuntu
The thing you would want to look into would be
Openldap ( just google it )
Its not as simple or straight forward as the windows AD user interface.
But if you want to run something simlar on ubuntu, that is your best bet.....

I've never tried this as I haven't needed to but Samba should be able to do what you want

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

Thanks for the replies. After some more research I've found that something similar can be done with Samba, it creates an NT4 style network. I'm a newbie when it comes to setting up networks with more than just file/print sharing, so I'm not totally clear on what functions this would provide. However, the new version of Samba under dev is said to be able to act as a DC with AD style directory services. Hopefully this is true but am in no great rush...more for personal interest.

    Cheers.
