    A wierd sound problem...

First of all, ... I'm new to the linux OS, I'm using Ubuntu 9.04.
    Problem:
When I started using Linux, i found out that i had no sound so i went on the internet, browsing for forums to help me... no luck... I have a problem similarly, but different and is certainly wierd,...
So I started experimenting with some configuration, alsa - stuff etc for almost 2 hours...
Then I remembered that (while I was using Vista) I had another strange "Abnormality".
When I went to my sound devices, i found a lot AND a separate for my headphones (that never was accessible for some reason...) so that got me thinking and a solution came up:
"Maybe my pc is mistaking the Headphones as a sound device and ignoring my normal speakers..." So I plugged in my Headphones In Port 2 ( I have 2 ports for them)(and I don't know the technical term for those plugs) and Poof!! There was sound, so I tried Port 1 and again, nothing... Why can I ONLY use my headphones? (They're kinda broken so I don't want to use them(Only the left ear-piece receives sound...) Please help me... Thank In advance and If my english is bad: sorry, not my native language

I had a similar problem, no audio through speakers, only through the headphone jack. This is what worked for me. Give it a shot:

To fix this in Ubuntu 9.04, left click on the speaker icon, then click on volume control.

Here I clicked on preferences, then scroll down and check the box for External Amplifier.

This brought up a new tab next to the Playback tab called switches.

Open the Switches tab and uncheck External Amplifier.

And here's the link to the thread. There might be some more info in there if the above doesn't work for you:
