Wireless quit working
Please help. I am relatively new to Linux sys admin tasks that I am having to constantly do to keep my laptop running. I have Lenovo 3000 N200. Ubuntu 8.04. It was working fine, until about 2 weeks ago I started it and it can see wireless networks but cannot connect to any of them. I have tried to manually configure it, I have tried anything and everything I have read on the net but nothing seems to fix it. I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corp NetLink BCM5906M Fast Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02)
What other info do you need?

Did you try Anton Kholov's firmware update here?
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/16768
Besides that one, one response was to disable and re-enable wireless through Network Manager, which worked for that particular user.Registered Linux User #420832

tried both, still not working
It did work with the liveCD, so the hardware is good. I tried the steps from Antons firmware update but without success. I tried another couple of things I read - the "sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter" but it also did not solve it, and someone suggested removing the "~/.gnome2/keyring/default.keyring" thinking it should recreate the file, but it has not created the file again so I may have screwed up the system beyond repair. This is really frustrating and keeping me from working on stuff that I need to be working on. If you have any other ideas on how to fix this I would be very grateful. I am hoping I don't have to do a reinstall.

b43-fwcutter is only to to install firmware for certain broadcom wireless cards. It won't help you with the Intel 4965.
Please post the output of the following commands.
Code:lspci -knn lsmod iwconfig ifconfig dmesg

Hmm, just rereading your post. What kind of security are these wireless networks using? WPA, WEP? Have you tried connecting to an unsecured network? Have you checked that the password hasn't been changed on your router? Are you able to connect to your network from other machines?

Hi, thanks for replying. Here is the info you requested... wow... lots of stuff there!! I am using WPA TKIP security. No, I am unable to connect to ANY wireless network. Yes, I am still connected wirelessly to my own router with other computers so the password has not changed. Like I said, it was working fine, then the next day I booted up and it would not connect. I don't think anything has changed. I have been reading boards and trying different "fixes" ever since. It was last working on 8/1/09. I dont think I did any system updates, and nothing else has changed. I am near the point of returning to Windoze - God forbid!!
the command you asked me to run did not work as shown below:

First, code tags are your friend. Makes reading stuff easier.
I'm guessing this is the key:
Try this[ 47.260645] iwl4965: Error sending REPLY_SCAN_CMD: time out after 500ms.
[ 47.260746] iwl4965: TX Power requested while scanning!
Possibly reboot also.Code:sudo ifconfig wlan0 down echo "options iwl4965 disable_hw_scan=1" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/iwlagn.conf sudo modprobe -r iwl4965 sudo modprobe iwl4965 sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
If it doesn't help, check the output ofagain and see if those errors are still there.Code:dmesg | grep iwl

still not connecting to my router. the output from the dmesg | grep iwl is as follows:
Code:dmesg | grep iwl [ 36.764113] iwl4965: Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN driver for Linux, 1.2.0 [ 36.764116] iwl4965: Copyright(c) 2003-2007 Intel Corporation [ 36.764218] iwl4965: Detected Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN [ 37.733709] iwl4965: Tunable channels: 11 802.11bg, 13 802.11a channels [ 37.734669] wmaster0: Selected rate control algorithm 'iwl-4965-rs'
Also, what about the lack of the .gnome2/keyrings/default.keyring? should I create an empty file for that? has it not created it yet because I have been unable to connect therefore generating the file?
thanks.Last edited by nochids; 08-26-2009 at 02:49 AM. Reason: removing stupid question

You shouldn't need to create the keyring file.
Hmm, the previous errors are gone, so that seems good. I don't know why it isn't connecting now, though.
Are you using wireless n by any chance? The driver only supports a/b/g modes.
A number of people have had troubles with the default networkmanager. You might try replacing it with WICD.
I'll look around and see if I can find more info.

Not using n. This has been working for almost 2 years now, and all of a sudden, something broke and I have tried everything to get it to work again unfortunately with no success. I will tell you that after rebooting it did connect to an unsecured network (with very weak signal) and then I tried to connect to my own and it failed. I don't know if that helps or not.
Is there any way that I can reinstall those components of the OS? or can I have the disk "repair" it? I am just trying to avoid having to copy all the personal files and then also reinstall all the apps I have running, although, if I had done that in the beginning I wouldnt have wasted the last 3+ weeks trying to fix it!!
