I have two computers at home, a laptop and a desktop, i can run a LiveCD of any distro on my laptop but on my desktop i have these errors ...

    can't boot any OS on my Desktop!

    I have two computers at home, a laptop and a desktop, i can run a LiveCD of any distro on my laptop but on my desktop i have these errors { while I am trying to boot BT4 which is Ubuntu 8.10 based }

    hda : dma timeout error status 0x58 driveready seekcomplete
    ide : failed opcode was unknown
    many times then I/O errors and system got stucked

    I have two physical Hard Drives:
    - 40GB old one
    - 80GB new one
    both IDE

    so wut'swrong??
    btw: I ran them through smartmontools and both passed

    so any help appreciated

    Try ide=nodma kernel option.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    bager1 BT4 stands for Back Track 4 it is a linux distro for penetration testers,
    devils casper how to edit the kernel option???? the LiveCD does not boot at all

    Doesn't it show any kind of Menu at startup? Most of LiveCDs allow to add kernel options at startup.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    i tried to add ide=nomda to the line when it boots
    /boot/vmlinuz BOOT=casper boot=casper nopersistent rw quiet vga=0x317 ide=nomda

    but same error

    is it possible that the IDE cables are damaged or so???

    According to this kernel documentation, ide=nodma is not a valid option. To disable DMA for all IDE devices (PATA and SATA), the correct kernel boot option is

    libata.dma=0

    See if that helps

    thnx D-Cat i will try that and get back with result
    btw another issue showed up while trying to compile sth on my laptop (kubuntu 8.10) when i try to ./configure I get that there are no KDE libraries, and i have kde-devel installed
