    Question computer freezing..well..a weird freeze..

    Hey guys, I'm a new linux user, I'm running linux mint and came here seeing as mint is closely related to ubuntu. I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to linux and still in the process of learning from scratch. I've dual booted win xp and mint together but I'm running into this annoying thing where my desktop freezes. Its not quite a full on freeze its just I lose control over my mouse and clicking on icons and 'close' buttons etc don't seem to work.. But i can "TAB" around places sometimes until the mouse comes 'back'. Hopefully you get the jist.

    Also sometimes hitting cntrl+alt+del and closing the "shutdown screen" afterwards gets the mouse back in working order too but there are moments when that fails as well.
    Other than all this I'm lovin mint
    Anyone has any idea on how to fix this?. Other than all this I'm lovin mint

    -cheers.

    By "dual booted" you mean either can be booted but only one at a time, correct? Otherwise you must be using some kind of Virtualization. I assume that you are having this problem when running Mint alone. Open a Terminal and invoke the 'top' command. Copy the first 20 or so lines it produces in a reply. This program refreshes every few seconds but show what it produces in a post.
    Actual Code--> $top -d 30.00 (hit enter)
    After copying the output to a text editor hit Ctrl & c together to break out of the loop.
    Cheers...
    Robert

    Commonly, issues with your graphics driver can cause freezing.

    Can you post the contents of /var/ log/Xorg.0.log?

    Also the output of
    Code:
    lspci | grep VGA

    Well, it appears that X has chosen the correct video driver for your card. The problem is likely with some application that has overflowed resources (maybe a combination of Compiz and Firefox?) which has resulted in a timing issue.

    I once had a similar problem a couple years ago. The pauses were annoying as all h--- when trying to write a letter. The only way I figured to fix it when it started acting up was to reboot. It only started after I seriously peaked out the RAM and had used a significant portion of swap (which with the kind of memory leaks in Firefox at the time, was about every three days on average). From your top output, it does not appear you suffer from that cause, so all I can suggest is it's another resource being maxxed out, probably video.

    I suggest you disable compiz (3D desktop effects) and see if that helps.
