    Is upgrading OpenOffice from "Launchpad PPA for OpenOffice.org Scribblers" on Xubuntu Hardy safe? Current version is from the Hardy repos.

    Short answer, most likely.

    Assuming you import the GPG key for the PPA, you can be reasonably certain that the packages you're downloading are legit. Then it boils down to how much you trust the people running the PPA. I'm not aware of any instances of malicious PPA's, or people downloading malicious code from a PPA. I would say the risk is minimal, but still a little higher than staying with the official repositories.

    I'd seen OO 3 on a Windows box and wondered why Hardy didn't have an upgrade option. I looked around, found how to add the repository, get the key and did the upgrade.

    There are a few nice improvements. A small annoyance was that I had to re-customize my toolbars.

    I think I notice a speed improvement upon loading, but I didn't try clocking before-and-after.
