    Welcome to the forums!

If the root partition is full, you will need to expand its size or delete some unneeded files on that partition. You can use the Parted Magic LiveCD to expand the root partition, but you'll need free (unallocated) space next to the partition that you want to expand:

In the end, you might have to move some partitions around on the disk in order to gain the free space next to the root partition, depending on how your partitions are currently setup.

If you've never deleted the package cache after installing new packages, you can probably do that to gain some space.

How big is your hard drive? The simplest (? - perhaps "most familiar" is a better choice of words) way I know would be to re-install Ubuntu and choose "manual partitioning." That way you can allocate as much space as you need for the system. On my 80-GIG hard drive I set up 10 GIGS for "/" (root), 1 GIG for swap, and the rest is /home.

    Back up first, of course.

The root directory is /, the equivalent of the C:\ drive in Windows. More or less, it's saying you're out of space. Try deleting some stuff out of your home drive and trying again.
