    Office "writer" not WIN frindly....

During a recent job search I sent out several resumes that I had done using Office Writer. It's my understanding Office Writer is the equivalent of Win "Word", however those receiving my attachment via e-mail are unable to open my my resume done in Linux Office Writer using Win MS Word. Is anyone else experiencing this? Have you found a solution?

Either save as a PDF or a word doc rather than the default .ods

PDF is probably better than .doc as it is read only

What format are you saving your files in? The default for OpenOffice is usually either OpenDocument (ODT) or StarOfficeWriter (SXW) depending on your version. You have to specifically tell it to save to Microsoft Word (.DOC) if that's what you want.

If your employers are okay with it, I'd also recommend PDF, as it's the only way to absolutely guarantee they'll see it exactly as you intended. It's essentially a document image format.

Yeah, my default is 'odt'.... and as both of you have suggested I have saved all of my resumes in both formats (odt and pdf). I would much rather send as a pdf but when an employer requests them in word format I try to accommodate that first.
I didn't see MS word as an option in the save as menu but I'll look again.... thx.

It is perhaps worth noting, for others who view the thread, that you can get a MS Office addon from Sun (http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/) that allows MS Office to understand .odt documents (not just read, but also write).
In addition, MS Office 2007 SP 2 includes support for the Open Document Format (ODF) etc. However, the Sun plugin is said to be better.

The MS Office 2007 ODF Support is very broken - according to Linux Format Magazine.

To save your documents as .doc by default, go to Tools, select Options. From the Left hand pane select Load/Save and General. From the drop down menu select the Microsoft Word type you want it to save as

Ah, jeez... why is it so hard for MS to get stuff like this right? You just have to laugh. Or cry... .

Technically, they have stuck to a very strict (and pretty much unused) version of the format. This goes to prove that M$ can stick to standards when it suits them.

In case you are wondering why they chose to stick rigidly to that standard; remember "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" and they can now say
