    Error when installing any programs, help plox.

    Running Ubuntu 9.04. Im somewhat of a linux newbe, i have some idea of what I'm doing, but not that much. Anyway, i get the following error when attempting to install any packages, when installing through terminal, package installer, or auto installers:
    E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
    E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
    I read something about a file corruption in some install dir, but who knows (hopefully you guys do).
    Any help is greatly appreciated, since this problem has been preventing me from installing anything.

    Thanks, but i guess i should have mentioned that was the first thing i did.
    It returns this.
    dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0082' near line 1:
    newline in field name `#padding'
    my plan of action:
    Navigate to dir, remove 0082?

    I backed it up. It seems to have fixed the problem, but im not sure.
    dpkg.log reads as follows:
    2009-09-11 19:18:03 startup packages purge
    theres another file, dpkg.log.1, but i cant open it (unable to read character coding?). It's followed by a file called failog, if any of that is important.
