    My First Ubuntu

I booted my Imac off Ubuntu 9.04 powerpc liveCD. I've never worked on a linux before. So far, so good. My guess is that the LiveCD is limited in demo mode. I couldn't watch a youtube video due to not having flash player plugged in. I did hear some grinding noise, probably the fan, but only for a minute or two, twice. It didn't see my Usb Wacom bamboo tablet so I couldn't use it in Gimp. Also, there a slight offset on my display. The display wraps around near a quarter of an inch. I was disapointed that Gimp didn't have a cmyk mode. I also had trouble signing in my gmail.
    My setup is this:

Machine Name: iMac G5 20 inch
    Machine Model: PowerMac8,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1.25 GB
    Bus Speed: 600 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.2f4
    Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-825
Chipset Model: GeForce FX 5200--VRAM (Total): 64 MB

I may decide to do a complete install. Will I have problems with the youtube video players, displays and the Tablet? Will I be able to fix these? Do I need to format my only harddrive via the mac OS CD boot? Is there a type of format I need to choose or perhaps I can save some data I already have?

The live cd is not a limited demo mode. Everything on it is what you get in a default installation of Ubuntu. If something doesn't work, it won't work with the full install either. That said, just because it doesn't work with the defaults, doesn't mean you can't get it to work.

The Live CD doesn't include Flash or other "non-free" software because some of that software is not licensed to be distributed like that. But adding the software you need and want is so super easy with Ubuntu! It will even suggest software and offer to install it for you when you need a plugin for your browser or something! It's wonderful!

If you wish to install some restricted applications, the package ubuntu-restricted-extras may be something for you, as it includes proprietary fonts, flash, proprietary drivers and plugins(maybe even more).

Thanks for the infos. Right now, I'm trying to confirm why I would use Ubuntu instead of Yellowdog or any other apps. I'm lost among the different Linux OS and wondering which to choose. It looks possible that I can make my devices work. Before I start, I'll need to know how to erase everything on my hard drive on my Imac PPC and start over, cleanly. Is there a format I must chose? Doesn't the mac have thier own drive format? Should I use another type of format? Perhaps the Utbutu LiveCD will format the drive for me, will it?

The ubuntu installer does format the drive for you, but can also resize your other partitions enabling you to do a dualboot.
