can you start pidgin using terminal so you can post us an error message if any when it crashes? Just open a terminal and execute command pidgin

Also, pidgin doesn't support using webcams. They just added voice and video support in the latest release, but only for the xmpp protocol (google talk among others.)
Gyachi is the only linux im client I'm aware of that can do webcams with yahoo, however, it hasn't had a release since 2007, and yahoo made some recent changes to their authentication system which broke most linux clients. I assume Gyachi was affected, but I don't really know.

Assuming it's the default version in Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid, I would recommend updating to the latest version.Code:dpkg -l pidgin
