Sorry, but I'm a little confused because deb packages usually work well with Debian based distros, but not so well with RPM distros such as Mandriva, unless the Mandriva folks have made some changes that I'm not aware of. I'm assuming you are running Mandriva since this is posted in the Mandriva Forum. Perhaps Mandriva can use Synaptic now, but if so I was unaware of it, as it's been a very long time since I last ran Mandrake.
Can you explain the details of the situation a little better?
Edit: I think the APT HowTo explains how to do what you want, but I'm not sure that it would mention Synaptic, specifically:

Mandriva doesn't use deb package nor apt. PCLinuxOS uses apt, or did last time I used it, but still had rpm packages.
Working on the assumption that you're not actually using Mandriva, but Debian/Ubuntu, unless you setup a local repository, synaptic won't see these packages.
Otherwise, just install them as needed using dpkg, or gdebi if you want a GUI.

I'm sorry, I missed the forum. It is off course about Ubuntu. Please toss me there!
I know the command dpkg-scanpackages for that, but then it is lacking the different versions. I'm thinking of writing a software for it. AptonCD never actually worked for me!Last edited by minthaka; 09-20-2009 at 10:11 AM.
