    My ubuntu server

I have recently gone Ubuntu and I love it. My Laptop runs 9.04. (Dual boot with XP and a NTFS partition for a "common" area) I wish the audio worked (gateway laptop) and am still pursuing that.

I set up an old PC as a server with Ubuntu Linux 8.04.3 (Server) to be a fileserver for our home. Webmin makes it a dream. It is doing great. I got past the grub "error 18" by creating a 100mb boot partition.

I do have a few questions:

    1. It it the norm that home directories are accessible by all users via Samba? I am used to only having access to your own by default. It doesn't seem a very secure default. How can that be changed?

    2. Does anyone have any good backup solutions? This is a headless server so I SSH in or use Webmin. All the solutions I have found seem to rely on the GUI.
There is a DVD burner on the machine and ideally I would like to burn to DVD and (gasp) span if at all possible.

    Thanks Much.

I don't have specific answers to your questions, but hopefully this will guide you in the right direction.

    A couple of backup options:
