update firefox in Netbook Remix
I'm running UNR version 9.04 on my netbook. It ships with an old version of Firefox (3.0.8 I think). I'd like to upgrade it to the latest version (3.5 or thereabouts) but the "check for updates" option in the Help menu of Firefox is disabled.
I've read somewhere that this is because Firefox is run as an aptitude package in UNR. I've tried going to the Package Manager and installing one called "firefox-3.5". This didn't give any error messages when installing, but my Firefox icon still takes me to 3.0.8.
Ideally I'd like to manage firefox updates myself outside of the package manager (I find the package manager counter-intuitive sometimes). Does anyone have any ideas how I would do that without hacking about too much?
Alternatively, I could stick to the package manager, in which case does anyone know how I can upgrade to a later version of firefox?
Thanks,
Steve

Well, you could open terminal and type in
and after firefox opens go into preferences or options (I don't remeber which firefox 3.0.8 uses) and go to advanced and then updates and check the box for updates.sudo firefoxLinux Registered User # 475019

I haven't used UNR, but I believe these launchers are just .desktop files. If you right click on the icon is there an option to edit? If so, you can change the executable path to firefox-3.5 from Firefox.I've read somewhere that this is because Firefox is run as an aptitude package in UNR. You may also just be able to copy drag the icon from /usr/share/applications/firefox-3.5 to the desktop to get a new launcher. At least, that normally works with GNOME.
