Ubuntu comes with gnome-screensaver by default. If you don't want to use XScreenSaver, I have put together a simple example screensaver for gnome-screensaver. I don't have link posting privileges here yet, so you'll have to search the ubuntu forums for "gnome-screensaver - make your own". It shows you how to make an extremely simple OpenGL screensaver for Ubuntu without changing your screensaver manager.

Why do you want to make a screensaver? If it's for practice and learning to do it, then have fun. Otherwise, why reinvent the wheel? There are screensavers already available, and which work well.
