    Kubuntu sound issues

I've found lots of info about this, and have downloaded everything conceiveable (and some not), but I keep running into this:

    * Right-click on the speaker icon in the toolbar and select "Open Volume Control".
    * From the pull-down at the top, select "Audigy 2 ZS [SB0353] (Alsa Mixer)".
    * Select the "Switches" tab.
    * Check the "Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack" checkbox.

The problem is right clicking MY icon doesn't show any of these things. It shows Kmix, Mute, select master channel, and Quit. Period. I have a Dimension E520 that lost its sound 2 years ago when it did an automatic download of a Vista upgrade package. That converted me to Linux, and I just upgraded to Kubuntu 9.04, and it's still silent.

    Would adding emoticons help?

What happens if you try booting into the live cd? Can you access those options?

I could try that, but I don't think the problem is with Kubuntu. The directions to the switches tab, etc, are for Ubuntu, I think, and I was wondering how to make those changes in Kubunu. Also, any diagnostics that might help?

I believe kmix has the options you're looking for.
    Chapter*2.*Working with KMix

Under system settings, there is also a selection for sound settings where you can choose your device.

    Please post the output of
    Code:
    cat /proc/asound/version
    cat /proc/asound/cards
    lspci -v
There is a pretty thorough troubleshooting/info gathering script you can run here too.

    Reed:
Here are the printouts you asked for. Sorry for the delay. I'm having trouble doing anything with Kmix.

OK, Reed, I tried upgrading alsa, but ran into "couldn't find the package linux-headers-uname -r". Found other references to uname, but not -r. I'm presuming this is why I still have the old Alsa. Any suggestions? Somebody else relpied to Staphanes website with the same prob, but I didn't see a response.

    "couldn't find the package linux-headers-uname -r"
If you tried to install it as you just wrote it here, you have it wrong. uname -r is a command that outputs your current kernel version. You need to enter it exactly as in the guide so it should be
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
Note those are back ticks surrounding uname -r.

EDIT: You could also type uname -r into the terminal and use the output in place of `uname -r` in the above command.

Duh. There's copy and paste and here I am trying to key 50 lines of code in correctly. So I think I got it right, it says I've got the right version. . .now what happens? I can't find ALSA anywhere in system, utilities or application. Should it be? Two other things: after I got it loaded, it said "warning-mixer channels for the ALSA driver are muted by default." where would I go to un-mute them? Also, after running sudo alsa conf, I got this: Usage: /sbin/alsa {unload|reload|force-unload|force-reload|suspend|resume} Is that good or bad?

    Thanks for your patience.
