    Exclamation Help! Unresponsive apps and blank windows!

    After having some troubles with fsck runs, my Eee is not showing any windows from Firefox, Pidgin, Freemind, Text Editor,...

    In opening Update Manager & Document Viewer, all I get is the window with its title, which is otherwise completely blank.

    Folders bring up files and are able to display items contained, although many folders are read only.
    Permissions of folders show:
    Owners access: Create and delete files
    Group access: Access files
    Others: Access files
    When I try to change this, the error arises
    The permissions could not be changed.
    Sorry, could not change the permissions of the "Folder": Error setting permissions: Read-only file system
    Google Gadgets is able to run.

    The wifi is connected, but is not updating GG widgets.

    What can I do?

    Press Alt+Ctrl+F3 and try to create new user using sudo adduser command.
    Code:
    sudo adduser new_user_id
    Press Alt+Ctrl+F2 to switch back to GUI. Reboot machine and login through new user. Check if problem persists.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    unable to lock group fix

    After sudo password:
    Code:
    Adding user 'name' ...
Adding new group 'name' (1001) ...
groupadd: unable to lock group file
adduser: '/usr/sbin/groupadd -g 1001 name' returned error code 10. Exiting.
    What now?
