    [SOLVED] Forgot :Username and Password

    Hi everyone!

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 in an old laptop of my brother many months ago and I only heard that he just wanted to start using it yesterday. Sad to say, I already forgot the username and password. I am considering a fresh reinstall but since the optical drive of this laptop does not work, I still have to secure an external USB optical drive.

May I please ask for some help regarding this particular matter? How can we make another user so that I will not have to go to all the troubles of a fresh reinstall.

    Thank you very much! Cheers!

    Reset Passwd

    1.) Boot system
2.) When it gets to the Grub, press Esc to get to the Grub menu.
    3.) Press e to edit.
4.) Select the line that starts with kernel.
5.) Press e again to edit that line
6.) Go to the end of the line leave a space and add the word single
if single doesn't work add rw single init=/bin/bash
    7.) Press enter
8.) Press b to boot that kernel, with the added option.
    9.) Change passwd, and reboot.

    That should work.

I tried the other suggestion but I had better success in this sites suggestion. It was so simple in fact that my 12 year old son was the one who worked on it with me just beside him. He was very excited with his "first hack" )
