HELP!! Ubuntu problem error 22 when booting!!!!!!

    Hi,

I am REALLY new to linux so please be 'basic' with me...
    okay, this is the problem:

I have a windows vista and windows 7 rc1 32bit dual boot on my laptops hard drive, each on a separate partition. I tried to install ubuntu 9.04 on my 500gb portable external hard drive and all went well. It installed fine but it seems to have moved the boot loader or something onto the portable hd because i can only boot if the portable hd is plugged in. If it isn't it says

    "Loading grub stage 1.5"
    "error 22"

All i want to do is get rid of ubuntu 9.04 without breaking my computer because i know enough that if i delete the partition on my phd i will lose the grub thingy and nothing will boot.

    Thanks in advance,
    Ratman

There was a previous post about error 22. It was a problem in the MBR if I remember correctly.

EDIT: Wow, okay, i've been in your boat before. It has to do with dual-booting Linux with Windows 7. For some reason they hate each other.

Your problem is caused by installation of grub to the MBR of the internal hard drive. Use the Supergrub disk to fix the Windows boot.

You do not need to remove Linux in order to fix the problem. You can boot Linux after you fix the Windows boot issue using Supergrub and then install grub to the MBR of the external hard drive. If you need further help setting up grub - boot from Linux on the hard drive or a live CD and post the output of
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
    the -l has a small L not a one

I didn't really dual boot, i installed ubuntu jaunty on the portable hd and hoped that jaunty would boot when the hd was plugged in and windows would boot when the hd was out.

I guess you could call it dual booting though.
