    "seek failed" error in Mplayer?

    Hi,

I'm trying to get Mplayer to work. A DVD plays fine in Totem. However, when I try a do it in Mplayer I get the error "seek failed" pop up. Probably something pretty simple I've missed but any sugestions?

    Thanks

Put in a DVD and in a terminal do
    Code:
    mplayer -v dvd://
    Post any error messages.

I used either the play ">" button or when prompted for which application to launch, i.e Mplayer.

    Reed9, Thanks!
The output is below. Also when I enter that into terminal it does launch and play.
Also the only two packages I installed from Symantic were: "Mplayer" and "Mplayer-skins"
    Should I have installed more?

It doesn't appear to be using libdvdcss2 or livdvdread. Do you know if you've installed those? Have you enabled the medibuntu repos?

    If not do
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove --purge mplayer
    sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list \
     --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list &&

Hmm. Well, it works ok from the command line, right? Just not in the gui? You could try a different front end. I always preferred gnome-mplayer.
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install gnome-mplayer

yes command line launches it fine. I'll try that. But what front end is the default one then?

The mplayer project used to develop and include their own gui frontend. Their gui is no longer developed and it later releases is no longer included - so installing mplayer only installs the command line app, and you need to install a separate gui program (if you want it).

For Ubuntu 8.04, you'll see there is an mplayer-nogui package, so you can streamline a little by installing that and gnome-mplayer or other frontend.
