    MSI WIND U100 wireless problems

I have just received my new msi windu100 netbook and am having real issues connecting wirelessly. I am relatively new to linux and am half-way towards smashing my new computer up. It is using RTL8101E/RTL8102E card and I have read numerous threads suggesting fixes but many are too complex for me to understand.

I presume that the absence of the driver for the laptop is likely to be across all distros. I havnt tried any others as of yet, but will in a heartbeat if this is not the case.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Ollie

Which version of Ubuntu are you using? Can you get a wired connection?

If so, first thing is try updating your drivers. Make sure you have backports enabled in your software sources. Then
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty
Replace jaunty with your version of Ubuntu, ie, hardy for 8.04, intrepid for 8.10, etc.

Hold on, RTL8101E is a wired card. Can you post the output of
    Code:
    lspci -v
    lsmod

I am not sure if this is what you meant. I hope so. Yes I can get a wired connection but it just wont find any wireless networks when my other laptop finds 3 or 4 as well as mine.

    Thanks for the reply.

Did you run the command as the super user? I noticed that you were denied access to 'Capabilities' in general.

This is your card and it is using the rt2860sta module. Again, first thing to try is installing updated drivers as I posted above and restart.

If that doesn't work, we can try installing the newest driver from source.

Also, it's possible the almost release Ubuntu 9.10 will have fixed the problem. You can download the live CD of the beta release and see if the wireless works.

Yes I presume I was the 'super user' as there I am the only user. Thanks for the suggestions, I will try these out tonight and tomorrow and then get back to you.

    Thanks again.

I tried installing updated drivers but that did not change a thing. I shall try the new live cd tomorrow if not late tonight.

    Thanks.

Programs do not run with elevated privilieges by default. In the case of lspci, it wasn't info we really needed. To run command line programs as the "super-user" preface them with sudo, for GUI programs, use gksudo.

OK. I am now running ubuntu 9.10 beta and it appears to be working. This looks pretty slick too. Thanks for all your help reed.
