no wireless on an acer 5315

I am hoping someone can help me with my lack of wireless connection on an acer laptop. I decided to take the plunge and do a clean install of 9.04 and as a newbie I am really struggling. Tried system/admin/hardware and changed to the alternate atheros but still no success - checked top right hand corner of the screen for wireless connections but the box is empty. After Googling it seems some people are lucky with the acer wireless and some are not. Have downloaded latest madwifi driver but after that I am stuck. The driver is residing on my desktop at the moment if that is the correct way to go.

I haven't had any luck with madwifi.

Have you been able to connect at all? Do you run any type of encryption?
