Sorry for the delayed response....

I attempted to use this application to recover the files off of my secondary internal hard drive, but when i type in "df" into terminal this is what it displays:

to me i don't see my sescondary hard drive even noticed by foremost?

df is Disk Free .. it shows the free space on all mounted partitions. That simply means that the "recovered" drive isn't mounted.

What does sudo fdisk -l currently display?

I still do not see a partition. I'd reccommend we use fdisk to fix the partition type, but first we need to know what that is.

This will be some gibberish, but will hopefully also give a clue. In a terminal window, please type

sudo head -c 40K /dev/sdb

and show me the output. Thanks.

It looks like the disk got heavily overwritten, I couldn't speculate the cause. That's an interesting character "(" to be overwritten with.

The best I can suggest for you is a program called photorec, which will try to find some semblance of any common data file type left (who knows, there might be something further down the drive, but you'll have to tell it what file system type used to be on it... as mentioned, it would have been FAT32 or NTFS. There's no clue left here) and save it elsewhere. After that, you're going to have to zero out the drive, set a new partition table and reformat in order to be able to use it again. I'm sorry, but I don't think there's anything else to be done; I've never seen this happen before outside of an intentional secure erase that was incomplete.

Hm....I am not sure as to what happened either then. Oh well, let's forget attempting to recover the data. What do I need to do in order to allow Ubuntu to give me access to the secondary drive so that I can use it for storage again?

Well, first I'd zero the drive; "(" is ominous.

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=1M

That'll take some time (several minutes to an hour.. at 80GB I'll guess about 15 minutes). When you get your prompt back, you'll need to define a partition for the drive. The question is "Do you want to access this drive natively from Windows?" That will determine the type of partition to define (and perhaps where to do it)..

To define a Linux partition, use

sudo fdisk /dev/sdb

You will get a prompt. Type o for a new blank partition table.
n Make a new partition
p Make this a primary partition
1 This is the first partition slot
[Enter]
[Enter] Use the whole disk
w Write the new partition table to disk and exit fdisk

You'll get your prompt back. Fdisk defines an ext Linux partition by default, so now you need to format it. This is pretty simple.

sudo mkfs.ext3 -vc /dev/sdb1

This will format an ext3 type partition. The v option will tell you what's going on. The c option will check for bad blocks (not that I think there are any, but considering what happened to this drive, it's not a bad idea to check). This will cause the format to take almost as long as the zero did, but it's worth it to be sure of the integrity.

When that's done, all you have to do is figure out where you want to mount it in your directory tree and put it in the fstab.

If you want to make a Windows partition instead, while you can do this in Linux (just a couple extra steps), it would still need to be formatted after. This is easier done in the Windows partition manager. Just make a new partition that covers the drive. Windows should automatically define and format a NTFS partition for you. You can later access it from Linux.

Okay so I have opened up terminal and typed in
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=1M

and it has been on this screen for about 20 minutes now....should I see progress or is this what will be displayed until the operation has completed?
