Newer versions are usually meant to be better than earlier versions, but that's not always the case. If you are running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop, it might be more stable than the current release, and then again, maybe it won't.
My personal recommendation is to make images of your current partitions, try the latest version, and then if you find that you don't like it, you can go right back to where you were in just a few minutes by restoring the stored system images.
Regarding encryption, it's probably a good idea for anyone that needs it.oz

Thanks Ozar! I have to admit I am still very leery about messing around with my flimsy HP computer because I really do not know what I am doing.
