Audacity not recording
I click the record button and it does for 1/2 to one second and althugh the sweep continues across the screen, it just stops accepting iput from the microphone. Any help will be appreciated.

-Make sure your input (pull-down on right) is the one you want.
-Open the mixer (Volume Control) and make sure the input you're trying to record from is set for recording.
-If neither one helps, open Audacity's settings and manually define which device(s) to use and how (e.g. force ALSA). You should eventually find a combination that works.
Also make sure there are no other audio programs loaded. While most work okay along with Audacity, I know of at least one that doesn't... XMMS and Audacity together is a recipe towards a crash.

If you import an existing audio file, does it play back okay?

Okay, I'm guessing you have the correct audio card and server selected. What about various switches in the Mixer (like Mic1/Mic2, Mic Boost +20db, etc)? Have you tried using alsamixer instead (sometimes it works where others fail)?
