Hardware drivers not appearing in Hardware Drivers GUI - 9.10 beta
Hi guys,
I just installed Karmic beta and I'm having issues with getting my wireless driver to work. When I was using 9.04 and when I booted 9.10 from a CD, I could just go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and activate a wireless driver and everything would be just peachy. The problem is that, in the install of 9.10 beta, no drivers appear when I load the Hardware Drivers GUI, so I can't get wireless internet.
Is there anything I can do besides wait a few days for the full release of 9.10 and hope that solves the issue?

It is possible that the drivers are now in the kernel. Without more detailed information, I really can't tell you much. The thread linked to below describes the info that I need, and how to find it. Running the script in the second section of the thread is the easiest way to get the needed info.

Well, the Broadcom STA and B43 drivers decided to show up in the Hardware Drivers utility for no discernible reason - I haven't done anything since I posted this thread - but trying to activate either one of them returns the following error:
SystemError: Failed to lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
Don't know what that's all about...

Here's what I see.
You have two Broadcom network devices. A wired and a wireless. The wired connection uses the b44 and ssb modules. The wireless connection is not known (by me) to work with the b43 driver, yet it is loading anyway. It also uses the ssb module.
To use the Broadcom STA driver, you must remove the b43 AND ssb modules. This will make your wired connection non-functional.
I am not sure about the error. Do you currently have a wired connection?Paul

FWIW, the error appeared because I had Update Manager running and I had minimized it and forgot about it. I got the driver installed and everything's working now.
Yes, I was on a wired network. I took my computer into a computer lab on campus and stole the ethernet cable from a computer.
So I don't know why it took so long for the driver to appear but whatever, it's working now.
