    Basic command help

Very very new to Linux, taking an introduction course this semester and I am trying to grasp everything but it has been uphill so far. I was hoping this would be the place to come get some extra help. I got a few questions on this basic command.

Here is what the "question" is:

Display the user-ids from the mypass_with_spaces file
    And a similar one:

Extract the user-names, user-id, and group-id from the mypass_with_spaces file and store them in a file called users.dat
    I tried:

    Code:
    CP mypass_with_spaces users.dat
but that just copies the entire file. I'm confused how to just get the user-ids/group-ids/user-names.

    Any help guys?

    Thanks a lot!
