    Question Ubuntu 9.10 Freezing Up

Hello. I am running a dual boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10. I have a Gateway Computer with a 2 GHz processor and 1.25 GB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. My video driver is an integrated Intel variety.

I went to Salimane Adjao Moustapha's web site and copied and pasted all of his post-installation commands into my terminal to run them. Not sure if this guy knows what he is doing or not. He seems very intelligent and has a lot of good feedback on the site. Basically he seems to be upgrading/updating everything and adding apps for Video, Music, Utilities, Antivirus/Firewall, Open Office, GIMP etc... all done with terminal commands.

Somehow my screen freezes up on a regular basis. I can't mouse click on anything and CTRL+ALT+F2 doesn't bring up an instance of my terminal so I can't kill the offending process. It also freezes up sometimes when I first power it up. In any event, my only recourse is to pull the plug on my computer and reboot.

Any suggestions? I've tried re-installing 3 times already and the problem remains.

    Freshly installed Ubuntu freezing up

I can't seem to find any files named xorg.conf. I don't know why.

I recently disabled several startup programs could this have deleted my xorg.conf file?

Here is the link to his website

I've looked at his site, and I highly recommend you NOT use it. The things he's telling you to do won't necessarily break your system, but they could very well screw it up, and at best they're completely unnecessary.

Are these problems you're experiencing right after a clean install, or after you do all the things that website tells you?

There is an xorg file. but when i type Gedit xorg.conf I get a blank screen. Does this mean there is nothing in my xorg.conf file?

    Freshly installed Ubuntu freezing up

Thank you for replying. These problems I believe are happening after I've performed things from his website. Although I went to his website almost immediately after doing the install.

The point I'm trying to make is, are you still having the trouble with a fresh install and NOT having done anything to it? Have you tried running Ubuntu as-is with all the default settings and seeing if you still have trouble?

Wow. Why in the world would he recommend doing that to your sources.list. Eek. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

I think this bit is wrong. Either install libdvdcss2 with apt-get and medibuntu enabled, or install with the script that comes with libdvdread4.

But, I doubt the freezing is related to his tweaks. This was a common problem with intel cards in 9.04, and still seems to be a problem for some people in 9.10. I haven't found anyone posting a solution or workaround yet.

Also, /etc/X11/xorg.conf no longer exists by default. I'm not sure if
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xorg-xserver
creates one anymore or not. I would assume so.

Question Fresly Installed Ubuntu 9.10 freezing up

    Hello. Thanks for the help.
Well after re-installing again and avoiding the above mentioned website's instructions, my system still freezes up from time to time. I have come to the conclusion that the problem is with my integrated Intel graphics card.

Apparently Ubuntu hasn't fixed that yet.

I found one possible work-around here is the website:
Are your graphics dead in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)? This hack might help - CLICK
I followed his instructions but can't find the file "menu.lst" that he wants me to edit. Apparently this too is gone with Ubuntu 9.10. If you know of where I can find it I would really appreciate it.

Ubuntu 9.10 uses GRUB2 instead of GRUB. You can edit its conf file easily but I am sure there is no need to do that. Intel Card support is much better in 9.10 than all other previous versions.
    Execute this in Terminal
    Code:
sudo lspci | grep -i vga
    Post output here.

Post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file here.
    Code:
    cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    *Its Capital X in X11.
