Regular (non-LTS) releases are supported for a year and a half on the desktop. LTS releases are supported for three years. The next LTS release is scheduled for April 2010 (Lucid Lynx).

Earlier I had Jaunty server distro then I upgraded to Karmic. Through Update Manager.
Is it a year and half or 3 years.
I feel a year and half is too short

The LTS server releases are supported for 5 years, so Ubuntu 8.04 server doesn't reach end of life until April 2013. If you need longer support, probably best to use 8.04.
Otherwise, upgrade again with 10.04, and you'll have 5 years server support for that as well.
I believe the non-LTS server releases are still the usual 18 months.

As I said before, regular releases (like 9.10 Karmic) are supported for a year and a half. That means that in April 2011 no new security updates will be provided for Karmic Koala.
Long-Term-Support (LTS) releases like 8.04 Hardy Heron and the upcoming 10.04 Lucid Lynx are supported for 3 years.
If you're concerned about not having to upgrade every year and a half I recommend sticking to the LTS releases only and upgrading them once every 3 years when a new LTS comes out.
EDIT: If you're talking about server releases then it's 5 years support for an LTS release.Registered Linux user #270181

The reason why I'm so bothered is that, I did a install of asterisk on Jaunty server in my office.
While upgrading to Karmic, I had to keep my extensions.conf ( Dialplan ) and sip.conf files rather than upgrading it.
At home, I don't mind upgrading, whether 18 months or 5 years

In general, unless there is a major change to a piece of software, the config files aren't going to change much, there should rarely be a problem using older config files.
I would backup your config files before an upgrade, and use a tool like meld to check the differences and make any necessary changes.

I did have a backup copy of my dialplan.
Since I'm bit lazy
to type the diaplan all over again, I just kept it rather than upgrading the files.
