    reinstalling a installed package

    Using a terminal, try:

    Code:
    sudo aptitude reinstall packagename
    or

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install --reinstall packagename

Are you trying to install packages through command line using apt-get? I would suggest you try Synaptic Package Manager.
Execute firefox command in Terminal. Does Firefox pop up? Post error message here, if any.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
