Documentation for VMWare Workstation can be found on VMWare's site.

you should probably be using vm player, unless you have some reason to have the workstation...

to run it open up a terminal, cd into the correct directory and then do sudo ./VMware-Workstation-7.0.0-203739.x86_64.bundle

again, check out the player instead, workstation is hefty and unnecessary in most cases (especially for a home pc)

    You can also try Virtualbox.
The previous link is for the closed source version that comes with a few more features
than the open source version, which is available in Ubuntu repositories.

I second L4Linux's recommendation for VirtualBox. I use it on several Ubuntu boxes running Windows XP as the guest. Open source advocates may differ, but the version from Sun on the Virtualbox website has more capabilities that are useful than the plain free editions in Ubuntu/Debian repositories. I love VirtualBox! A really well made utility.

the reason I use vm player is because virtualbox lags HORRIBLY with netflix instant view, it's so unbearable that I overcame my "preference" for open source and went with VM Player.....
