I have just installed ubuntu for the first time, I will install vlc but do I have to install codecs?

VLC should have most everything you might need. If you should decide you need something else, check the Medibuntu Documentation for tips on getting the additional files installed:

Install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package for most codecs:
Code:sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

I recently installed VLC to pick up .wma stream from a Windows machine running Windows encoder and had no joy, I installed ffmpeg and got the stream perfectly after that.
