In theory it should work out of the box with networkmanager and Ubuntu 9.10.

Huawei 160
Hi - recently did a trawl of various ISP helplines for broadband dongles and was told by all that this modem does not work with Linux.
Only provider that stated they could help was 3g with the 'MI-Fi' which costs £69 on the payg network.
Orange and t-mobile both stated that they do not support Linux with their mobile internet.
I know this all seems a bit negative - specially as I have been with orange for many years and hoped to use their payg dongle.
I know theeir are aptches out there for other dongles and hope that the ISP networks will begin to realise that Linux users also have spending power lol

Hello and Welcome.
You're not going to have much luck getting tech support from any ISP concerning Linux or any machine that does not have Windows installed on it. If I were you I would disregard anything they tell you about Linux. If you can get the hardware to work then there is no problem, unless you run into some kind of proprietary software like AOL.I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

I believe there are drivers for all of the Huawei 3G dongles in the kernel now. Also not only does NetworkManager support them, it also will give you a list of operators for your country that you can pick from. I've set up a few now.
All you need to do is plug it in and after a few seconds it should pop up on the network list on the network applet. I believe on the first run it will provide a wizard for setting it up. I recommend having your PIN and PUK handy.

I just installed an old Sierra Verizon Broadband card in a netbook. Verizon said that I MUST first use their application to do the initial connection to their network. The service tech that I talked to told me that they don't support Linux with this card. I actually did a temporary install of WinXP to do this, but the WinXP driver is screwy, and it didn't work.
I went back to my Ubuntu 9.10 install, and was able to connect and use this card, after finding some simple instructions on the internet. I have noticed that my usage totals remain at zero! This may be a side benefit of using Linux, but it's only been a month, so we'll see.
I know that I have a completely different card and service provider. But the point is that when they tell you that it isn't supported, they mean that they don't know how to help you. Not that it won't work.Paul
