    Ubuntu Desktop Not Showing

I'm having the same problem. No desktop, or icons...just a black screen.

I have found out though that if you log in under "root" the desktop is shown and the icons are there. Then when you log back in under your own account, no desktop (black screen), and no icons.

    Any help?

    Thanks, Jeff:sad

Do you know of anything you might've deleted by accident?

If you don't want to sit through a bunch of troubleshooting, I would recommend reinstalling Ubuntu. It doesn't take very long at all.

    Ubuntu Desktop not showing

I have figured out how to fix it, but not without lacking results.

In appearance preference, if you put the visual effect tab on (none) the desktop comes back as it should be. Ubuntu initially puts the visual effects on (normal).

Haven't yet figured out how to fix it to where I can use the (Normal) tab.

I'm also trying to figure out how to install my ATI Radeon 9520 graphics card. When I tried to install it previously my monitor went 'Out of Range', so I just reinstalled Ubuntu.

    Thanks for you help,

    Jeff
