    retail plus wireless N usb adapter Ubuntu 9.10

    So, I was bored the other day and decided to upgrade Ubuntu to Koala. When Ubuntu is up and running and I plug in the wireless adapter, it lights up, but will not connect. I have to reboot my computer every time I plug it in to get Ubuntu to recognize it. I've tried logging out and logging back in, but that didn't work. I'm glad it still works at all after the upgrade, but it's annoying having to reboot every time I want to get online.

    More info is needed. Read this and then post the needed info:

    Wireless Setup - Start Here

    Also, post the output of this command, as it will give the live messages as you plug in the wireless.
    Code:
    tail -f /var/log/messages
    When I plugged in a wireless USB, this is what I got:

    Before plugging it in:
    Code:

    As you may see, this is a rt2870 wireless device. I am still using Ubuntu 9.04, as there is no reason to upgrade a perfectly good and working system.

    Hey Waterhead! Thanks for the speedy response. I'll get on that right away. I've been told by others to not upgrade if everything is working fine, but I figured if just sat there with the same version of Ubuntu the rest of my life I wouldn't learn as much. What's life without obstacles?

    Here's the output AFTER a reboot with me online. Don't know if you need this at all or if it's already incorporated in the txt file in my last post.

    Code:
    Nov 28 06:59:14 thornspear-laptop kernel: [   28.685178] Registered led device: b43-phy0::rx
    Nov 28 06:59:14 thornspear-laptop kernel: [   28.685198] Registered led device: b43-phy0::radio

    Nov 28 06:59:14 thornspear-laptop kernel: [   29.323642] ppdev: user-space parallel port driver
    Nov 28 06:59:43 thornspear-laptop pulseaudio[1598]: ratelimit.c: 3 events suppressed
    Nov 28 06:59:58 thornspear-laptop pulseaudio[1691]: ratelimit.c: 5 events suppressed
    Nov 28 07:00:04 thornspear-laptop pulseaudio[1691]: ratelimit.c: 2 events suppressed
    Nov 28 07:00:13 thornspear-laptop kernel: [   88.016860] ndiswrapper (iw_set_auth:1602): invalid cmd 12
    Nov 28 07:00:13 thornspear-laptop kernel: [   88.181953] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan1: link becomes ready
    Nov 28 07:00:22 thornspear-laptop kernel: [   96.632031] Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -95850531 ns)
    Next I will reboot the computer without the USB stick and get the output, then I'll plug it in and get the ouput. Then I'll reboot with the USB stick plugged in to get back online.

    With USB stick removed

    tail -f /var/log/messages

    Nov 28 07:21:29 thornspear-laptop kernel: [ 1363.649717] ndiswrapper: device wlan1 removed

    so, of course, now I plug in the USB stick to find it working for the first time in over a week....

    I don't know if running any of the commands in your thread would have changed anything?

    If and when it gets back to its old tricks, I will post the output here.

    Thanks again for your help Waterhead. Hope all is well. How goes thanksgiving down there?

    Grey Cup tomorrow!! If you've ever even heard of it...

    I see that you are using NDISwrapper. There is a new driver in your kernel, named rtl8192su. If it loads it will conflick with NDISwrapper. So, you may want to look for this.

    According to your txt file you have a built-in wireless:
    00:0b.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4320] (rev 03)
    Kernel driver in use: b43-pci-bridge
    Kernel modules: ssb
    The firmware needed is installed as well as the driver.
    So that should work.

    The next is your USB wireless:
    ============ lsusb ============
    Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0bda:8192 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

    There is a driver built in the kernel. But ndiswrapper is making troubles. If you uninstall that or blacklist it, things should work.

    Ok, so it seems that this problem only happens when I close the lid of my laptop while the computer is still running and it goes into hibernation with the USB still plugged in. When I open it again, it is no longer connected to the internet (which is understandable because closing it powers down all USB connections) but it doesn't automatically search for a connection, and I can't unplug it and plug it back in and have it boot up without restarting the system completely.

    So here's the code I was unable to give you yesterday

    tail -f /var/log/messages

    Code:
    Nov 29 08:22:21 thornspear-laptop kernel: [19481.358181] wlan1: encryption modes supported: WEP; TKIP with WPA, WPA2, WPA2PSK; AES/CCMP with WPA, WPA2, WPA2PSK

    Nov 29 08:27:56 thornspear-laptop kernel: [19817.064046] usb 1-3: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 14
    Nov 29 08:27:56 thornspear-laptop kernel: [19817.205338] ndiswrapper: driver net8192u (Realtek Semiconductor Corp.,06/30/2008,5.1029.0630.2008) loaded

    @ Charles 4809

    Thanks for your reply, I don't think that the broadcom is giving me a problem other than I cannot get it to run whatsoever. Waterhead helped me out with my original wireless issue a while back, the link to that thread is below.

    I don't see any errors there.

    Maybe you need to unload, and then reload the module.
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -r ndiswrapper
    Code:
    sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
