    Xubuntu won't mount my drives

    Hi.

I have a computer running Xubuntu 9.04, and when I insert floppy disk into the drive the Floppy icon doesn't show up on my desktop. Isn't the icon supposed to be always there? Also, when I insert a CD into my DVD drive, it won't mount that either. What should I do?

There's no way to efficiently autodetect a floppy insertion, so this is still manual. XFCE also can have some issues with with auto-notify... one of the bugs of being a middle-weight. CD/DVD's should still auto-mount since this is HAL's job and not a component of the Windows Manager, even if it doesn't tell you about it... check the /media directory a few seconds after inserting the disc, it should show up as the disc's volume label.

Look here for mounting in XFCE:

    or for manual mounting:

    * I disagree with the idea of formatting a floppy as ext3 because of the overhead and lack of portability, should be FAT12 for portability or just ext2 if exclusively used in Linux. You can also skip that part for pre-formatted floppies. Also, *buntu will likely make you prefix most of these commands with sudo .
