3 Screens: RANDR extension is not present

    Hi everyone,

Very new to linux Ubuntu here- because I got fed up with Windows

I have three 21' screens- using 2x nVidia 8800GT's. Windows it worked great. Ubuntu, a little more difficult- but I'm sure I'll get there.

I have the nvidia drivers, and I set up my 3 screens using the nvidia settings UI. But something has gone wrong...

Two screens now act like they are one (the main panel on top and bottom stretching across both screens, whilst my third screen remains black..not being used.

I try and go into "Display" but I get an error message:

"Could not get screen Information: RANDR extension is not present"

I have no idea what they are talking about!

Any help would be fantastic- I want to start using my new Ubuntu computer

    David

You need to go to the synaptic package manager gui and search for libXrandr. BTW, are you running 32-bit or 64-bit Ubuntu? Which one you install, libXrandr.i386 or libXrandr.x86_64 is dependent upon that. Once done, you might have to reboot. Then you should be able to setup your display to handle the 3 screens. Sorry but I don't have a 3-screen setup (use 2x24" wfp displays) so I cannot say this will work from personal experience, but it should push you in the correct direction.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

    I'm running Ubunutu 9.10, got a 32bit computer.

I believe in v9.10, synaptic package manager doesn't exist and it was renamed to "Ubuntu Software Centre"- so I search for 'libXrandr" but nothing shows up...?
